SpoIIID levels decrease upon activation of σ^K, mediated by a repressing action on σ^E availability ^{111, 153}. This relieves the repressor activity that SpoIIID has on a number of mother cell-specific genes and thus allows for transcription of these genes by σ^K and GerE ¹¹².
